Lovely looking and spectacular coloured egg, even lovely as a cross-bred hen. Tame enough to pick up, and good with dogs. Eat anything and very easy to hatch.
Gorgeous colour, tasty textured meat, will sleep in trees, don't eat my veg,200 eggs per chicken blue colour eggs all together perfect
This breed is a very beautiful breed. Ours is an orange, black, and red one, and her name is Cookie. She lays beautiful green eggs, I definetly reccomend this breed!
We have had araucanas for about 10 years now and they have always been the quiet, observent hens amongst our lot. The cockerals have been varied - young and a bit pushy, but overal a really gorgeous hen to have. They aren't too fond of the cold and in my opinion are a bit lazy- although our new cockeral has rounded them up and taken them across the field for a nose on a few occasions now. The eggs are beautiful and I am still in awe when i collect them daily. The only contender for competition would be the Pekin for me.

Very friendly, easy to keep birds and the cock is not too loud either. Got a bit much with four out of seven being male! Easy to handle and all hand feed and like being picked up with the exception of the most henpecked hen who is a bit edgy. Survived the last two hard winters with no problems. Good quantity of blue shelled eggs. Good broody mothers with a good survival rate of chicks this year so far. We have one black araucana chick also, so will wait to see if we have another hen or cockerel.A good breed to start chicken keeping with.
I have 11 Araucanna, i've had for a year. They are very friendly and very good layers. The eggs vary in color from pale pink to bluish to varying shades of green. They are great chickens to have my gr
Good birds, my trio are slowly getting used to me, but have had no eggs yet. Started picking up the cock, he is getting better but not too keen. I am going to show him so he needs to get better! A good breed, don't make too much mess, but are a little mean to my others, hence why they are in a coop on their own and let out at different times.
Hi, well we have araucana's and have had them for a few months now from young birds, ie we got them around 5/6 weeks old, we have just realised this morning we have a cockeral, much to my suprise as he is not looking much different from the hens yet...lol, all are lovely friendly birds and eating tit bits from the hand is a fly way to get them closer and trusting you more, my 5 look for breakfast at the same time every morning and do not settle till they get it, they are very clever birds and seem to love routine....they will let you pet them but agree they don't much like being lifted.....as for out the pen and garden freedom they don't wander far and behave that way but they can clean a garden of veg and flowers in no time lol....they are def not garden friendly unless you pen an area of....having lot's of fun and we love them...no eggs yet but plenty time for that.
I love my Araucanas; we only keep bantams and whilst I think my Pekins are prettier, the Araucanas have far more character and are better layers than the Pekins (presumably other posters are comparing them with non-bantam pure breeds?), their eggs are larger and are the lovely blue. I have four now; the two newest arrivals will happily sit on our laps so if handled enough when young they do get tame. One of my older Araucanas leads the other hens and the cockerel into the kitchen looking for treats - she's got bolder this summer and now I regularly find her in the dining room!!
