About the course

Our introductory course offers an opportunity for you to see how chicken keeping fits into daily family life! This session is designed as an introduction to keeping chickens and there will be ample opportunity to ask your own questions over tea and cake. While you're with us we'll aim to cover:

1) The best place to put your chickens and how to protect them from wily foxes

2) Daily care for your chickens

3) How to hold and handle a chicken (if you can catch one!)

4) Knowing a healthy chicken and keeping those bugs away

5) What to feed you chickens

6) Eggs and laying

The majority of the course takes place outside so please come suitably dressed, we recommend wellies and a raincoat. The hosts of this course accept no responsibility for any loss or injury while on the premises. By booking on this course you are agreeing to these terms.

About Me

Hello we are Jodie and Nigel and we live on a smallholding just outside Solihull.

We love having chickens.  They all have their own personalities and supply us with eggs and fertiliser for our fruit and veg!  Our chickens are great company, following us around or greeting us every day in the hope that we have some treats (i.e. the odd grape!).  Once you've had chickens it's hard to imagine life without them.

Our son adores the chickens and happily takes on much of the day to day care.  Its important to us that it teaches him where food comes from and the rewards that small scale self sufficiency can bring.  After years of buying organic free range eggs we now love collecting our own every morning.

We currently have around 15 chickens of varying breeds, hens & cockerels and various ages.  We are always looking to add to our flock!

           Excellent!

- Steve, 05 December 2011

I would recommend the class to anyone either wants to keep chickens or just for an interesting day out. It would be fantastic for kids too. I particularly enjoyed holding a chicken for the first time :) Jodie and Nigel were friendly, informative and inspiring. We couldn't have wanted a better class. It would've been great to have a direct phone contact number but it wasn't really a major issue as I had a good response via email. Recommend to let people know that there is a very good local place for breakfast at the fishery down the road: http://www.fisheries.co.uk/blythe/ -Steve

           Very Good and Informative

           Great Course

- Rebecca, 23 August 2011

Thank you very much. This was a great course. It was quite informal but very informative. Perfect for a beginner like me to ask loads of bacis questions and learn everything I needed to know.

Great! You won't fall fowl on this course!

- Kate, 21 August 2011

Good directions started the day off well, the course ran to good time and started promptly. Jodie and family have a lovely set up and were really generous in sharing their time and considerable expertise. Always willing to answer questions, Jodie had a wealth of experience on every aspect of chicken keeping. We left feeling much more confident about our planned set up and choice of chickens. Highlight for us was learning to handle and hold the chickens though we left with knowledge on feed, cleaning, bedding, pens, runs, coops, breeds and putting off Mr fox, amongst other things. A warm cup of tea and a homemade brownie were on our plate for after. Great afternoon, worth every penny. Would highly recommend to chicken enthusiasts of all levels.

           Enjoyable

           Excellant

- Denis, 26 July 2011

Jodie and Nigel were so polite and only to willing to answer any questions I had. They have good knowledge for anyone wanting to find out about keeping chickens as a beginer and I would stongly recommend them to anyone wanting to persue with this. I will now need to check my deeds for keeping chickens at my property and do some necessary work regarding fencing at home where necessay and all been well will start the process in 2012. I know this is a long time off but with the winter months starting to arrive and my shift work at present I want to start off and with a sound footing. Please pass on my thanks to Jodie and Nigel and I wish them well in all they are doing on their land. A superb couple and yet again so, so helpful. Denis

           Really useful

- Nathalie, 01 May 2011

I'd done quite a lot of research before going on this course, really just wanting to make sure that I was fully prepared before I got some chickens. Jodie, Nigel (and Joseph) definitely fulfilled this objective. They explained all the good and bad bits of keeping chickens and I felt I could ask basic questions without feeling silly (so I did!). They shared loads of tips and websites for other useful information. Jodie had cooked some delicious biscuits and cupcakes to top it all off - so thank you! I collected my two chickens on the way home (as planned), along with hemp bedding (not straw) and the other essentials that Jodie and Nigel suggested and they are brilliant!

           Eggcellent!!

- Matt, 28 March 2011

Jodie and Nigel are extremely knowledgeable on all to do with keeping chickens. I attended the Hen Party for beginners with my two children who absolutely loved it, this is a great course and we all thoroughly enjoyed it and Jodie and Nigel are the perfect hosts.

           Enthusiastic hen keepers

- Valerie, 12 March 2011

We had a lovely time on our Hen Party for Beginners course finding out more about chicken keeping. Both Jodie and Nigel were knowledgeable and shared some great tips with us. They have beautiful and very happy hens with lots of space. Before we left, they gave us a box of eggs which were delicious, thank you!! We've had our hens for two weeks now and we love watching their antics.
