I live with my husband, 2 parents, 2 cats, 2 dogs, a few koi, and not enough chickens (I only have about 300) and two incubators that cannot churn out enough chicks! We have a small holding that we don't really have time to look after, but it is well loved, in a little village called Aldermaston in Berkshire This open morning is a chance to come and have a look at the chicks, chickens, ducks and geese, to see if it is something you would like to do, and ask as many questions as you wish. Refreshments, and nibbles are supplied, but please feel free to bring a picnic along and enjoy lunch amoung the chickens! There are plenty of picnic benches scattered about!. See not only all the birds, feel foods, chickens, bedding, see poop, and see what chickens do, smell like (they don't smell, it's a fable they smell horrible!) Information freely available on choosing your hens, from ex bats, rare breeds, bantams, miniatures, happy hybrids, or giants - if you want a mixed flock or just 3! I have approximately thirty different breeds! And yes, they are all my pets, though I do sell happy, healthy chickens too (subject to availability)! My birds range from tiny but spectacular pekin bantams to mighty massive Giants. Know your Australorps from your Welsummers? Nor did I when I first started, in fact I started keeping chickens with two cockerels, who never laid eggs! So if you know nothing about chickens and want to keep chickens! Pop along and see me! Chickens are a wonderful addition to family life. You can see Omlet Go, an Omlet Classic and the fabby Omlet Cube - all housing chickens! The love of OUR families life, the chickens give so much enjoyment, our recharged ex battery hens, will keep you amused, guaranteed! I will talk about the BHWT and keeping ex bats in the garden too - it's easy! This session is designed as an introduction to keeping chickens and will give you the opportunity to ask your own questions. * See an eglu Go and Classic and and an eglu cube and find out how they work * Handle and hand feed our lovely chickens * Learn how to pick a suitable garden spot * Daily care and maintenance requirements * How to feed your chickens. Why I recommend Allen and Page Feed for all hens from POL. * Health and wellbeing and observation of looks and behaviour. * Recognizing worms, mites and ill health and how to treat some conditions at home. * Eggs and laying. Eggs, feel them, see them, tiny to massive, pure white to dark brown, and understand why too! * Introducing new hens to the flock * Dealing with a broody * Common Health Supplements * Hens' Bedtime routine (Roosting for the night) * We find out about moulting, wing clipping and toenail cutting. * Feel free to ask any questions along the way or at the end of the course with 'Question Time' and the chance to make purchases, I stock Allen and Page chicken food, some of my cleaning gear for chickens is from 50p, so bring your pennies along, and of course buy some eggs from the girls you've met! Please come dressed ready for the weather - white t-shirts not advisable and as you will be handling chickens! Children are welcome (free of charge), but must be accompanied by an adult. adults. A very agreeable morning, apart from the weather, spent with a lady by her own admission a chicken nerd. She has the patience of a saint and the knowledge of an encyclopaedia and is totally devoted to chickens and their welfare. The whole history of her involvement with poultry, from her beginnings with two birds and house her father made for her up to the 300 birds she has today in a whole selection of housing is on view, plus a hatching room. She is also the local guru, looking after sick birds that people leave or even just throw over her hedge. I was fortunate enough to be the only pupil that morning, even so we ran an hour over time. The eggs I came away with have convinced my somewhat sceptical wife that perhaps we do need a few hens in the back garden. If you need practical advice, pros and cons and a commitment to getting some hens, it is well worth travelling to meet this knowledgeable, practical, charming lady.
Annette is incredibly friendly and welcoming The course was informative and practical with time devoted to holding and observing the chickens from 1 day old chicks to older hens. We covered choosing your hens, feeding, types of coops and locating, chicken health, holiday boarding and much more. There's no better trainer than someone who has done this before and who has a wealth of experience to share. Great course, thank you.
I thoroughly enjoyed this course, having had chickens for about a year I wasn't sure what to expect. Annette was really welcoming, and friendly. She answered all my questions and showed me different way of doing things that I hadn't thought of, it was very hands on and I went away feeling much more confident.
What else can really be said that hasn't before? A brilliant morning course which we think would be a must for any prospective chicken owners to go on. Annette was welcoming, friendly and very knowledgeable with a good sense of humour. We saw lots of different breeds and learnt so much including the joy and fun of keeping chicken. Her enthusiasm was catching and we are now in the process of asking Annette to help us choose our first (since we were children) chickens. Annette is happy to help if you have problems or need advice with any of your chickens which is a huge assurance for those of us new to the game. All in all brilliant!
Friendly atmosphere, all questions encouraged and answered very well, obviously v experienced and knowledgeable.
I bought this course as a gift for my husband - we had been thinking of getting some chickens. I'd read the previous reviews and thought it would be good and we were not disappointed. Annette was informative, honest, took any questions (and never made us feel silly for asking!). We learnt so much in such a short space of time, including the opportunity to hold some chucks that our plan to get chickens sometime later in 2012 has become; we are getting them in about 6 weeks and have already bought the coop! We are truly inspired and knowing that we can contact Annette with any questions or concerns really gives us confidence to get.... errr cracking!!
I attanded one of Annette's advanced courses having kept chickens previously. She is very friendly and accomodating, the course covered averything we want wanted to know, and gave us the opportunity to have a good look at different breeds and talk about conditions and problems that arise. I would happily recommend attending Annette's courses to anyone, whatever level, she is informative, friendly and the sort of person it would be good to have on speed dial just in case!
Excellent courses which complement each other. Took courses a month between each other which was ideal. As a novice felt very well supported and Annette prepared to answer endless questions. Really enjoyed both events and would thoroughly recommend to all. Thank you.
Wonderful venue, very friendly host, Annette was very welcoming and had a great knowledge of keepng chickens. We could not have been given a better insight into chicken keeping and are looking forward to getting our first chickens soon.
The course was very helpful and very useful. I'd recommend anyone just starting out or thinking about getting chickens take this course.
