We were confirmed townies and completed our escape to the country 8 years ago, part of our new rural life was keeping chickens. Our first two hens Barbara and Margo arrived complete with their bright yellow hen house. We really enjoyed keeping our own hens and collecting our own eggs, it was the start of a slippery slope. Since then we have expanded our flock and knowledge of hens and have been running Hen Keeping Courses for nearly 3 years. Away from hens we are experienced at delivering training to an array of industries with interactive courses. Through our trials and triumphs we can help you feel prepared to welcome your hens home.
The course that covers everything you will need to become a competent hen keeper. With lots of hands on experience to give you the confidence to handle your hens in every situation. The course is a 3 hour course and then the rest of the day to ask questions and wander round the birds.
Please note that this course is not suitable for children under the age of 10; due to high demand for places, all those attending must have a pre-booked and paid place. The hosts of this course accept no responsibility for any loss or injury whilst on the premises. By booking on this course you are agreeing to these terms.
Hello we are the Peaches, we have been keeping hens in our mark one eglu for over 8 years and have a Cube. We live in a small village, just outside Burton on Trent.
We had always wanted to keep hens, but it wasn't until we saw the eglu and thought 'we have to have one of them!' The hens are really fun animals to be around and each one has its own personality and character. They are very friendly - our 7 year old is very happy to cuddle with them. The hens keep us very well stocked with the freshest, tastiest eggs in the world!
During the course we will show you how to handle the hens, plus how to maintain your eglu (ours is nearly 8 years old and looking as good as new!) looking after the run (ours has survived having a horse sit on it!) plus our daily routines and health checks. We also have a cube along with a selection of wooden hen houses. We have 7 resident hens at home a mixture of hybrids and pure breeds, they age from 6 months to 6 years old. During the school holidays the number swell to over 50 hens so plenty of hens to hug!
From our humble start with our first 2 girls, Barbara and Margo we have now set up our business, 'Hens for Hire' hiring out hens and eglus to schools all over the country as well as incubators and hatching eggs. We train the staff how to look after the hens and spend time with the children talking all things chicken! then have the hens home for the holidays. Check out our website www.hensforhire.co.uk
We have been invloved in Open Farm Sunday and written articles in Poultry World, plus been Course Host of the Month in the Omlet Newsletter in 2010.

Attended the course on Saturday 16th. Claire was very informative and gave me lots of things to think about before embarking on purcahsing my own chickens. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who is thinking about chicken keeping as it goes through all the important aspects of this in detail. Many thanks Claire. You have made me feel more confident about keeping chickens.
Very good course ... as far as we are aware all topics covered and very well explained ... a very enjoyable and informative day.
My girlfriend and I attend the Hen Party for beginners, despite having owned chickens for approx 6 months. Claire and Steve were great hosts and spent a lot of time running through the advantages of the Cube and the Classic. It was also really nice to see a whole range of chickens and talk about who well they interact. The course was a really good way to reassure us that we were doing the right things and also answer a few questions I'd not found on the forum. I'm keen to follow up with the intermediate course next!
A really enjoyable course which has given me the confidence to buy my eglu and get my first chickens.
We learnt a lot of useful information about chicken keeping which was presented in a friendly, practical way. We were able to handle their friendly chickens and now know all about the day to day care needed for healthy chickens. Afterwards we had an enjoyable chat over coffee and cake.
Very welcoming hosts, very knowledgeable. Now can't wait to start keeping chickens, just need to get the garden sorted.
Booked this for my husband and he hasn't stopped smiling since! The course was exactly at the right level and extremely interesting. Claire and Steve were fantastic, very down to earth, friendly and knowledgeable - we could have stayed all day!!!! Coffee, tea and homemade cakes went down a treat!
Great fun morning. Already have 4 hens, but wanted to know if what we were doing was right. Found out loads of useful info and tips. Claire & Steve Peach were welcoming hosts who shared their knowledge. Would recommend this course to anyone in the area!
THIS WAS A GREAT COURSE. BEFORE THE COURSE MY 12 YR OLD SON WASN'T TOO BOTHERED ABOUT GETTING CHICKENS - SINCE THEN HE WANTS TO KNOW WHEN WE'RE GETTING THEM..... VERY INFORMATIVE WITHOUT BEING BORING. PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITY TO ASK QUESTIONS AND NOT FEEL TOO DAFT! THANK YOU.
Having purchased two hens from Omlet back in July, and needing some answers to questions I had, I decided to attend the course conducted by Claire and Steve Peach. They are very good hosts and really gave us a hands on approach to looking after the hens. My questions were answered simply, and I came away feeling that the course is a very worth while experience.
