About Me

We are Steve and Lisanne, and we run the Omlet hen keeping courses in north Manchester.  I am the main chicken keeper, and the guilty party who converted the family to 'the good life.' My husband, Steve, is the perfect party host as he keeps everyone topped up with a drink!

I have kept all types of animals in my life but chickens definitely rock!  They are relatively low maintenance and they produce fresh eggs as well as manure, pest control and provide us with entertainment!  However, when we started out, there was limited information available and no one else kept chickens as pets in the area.  Chickens were still regarded purely as farm stock, so I think a lot of people thought we were a bit mad!  Our neighbours have been great though, and have been fully supportive from the word go.  We have had various breeds of hens, both hybrids and pure breeds.  We like to choose hens that lay different coloured eggs for variety and also so we know who's pulling their weight!  We also have 2 Siamese cats, Bart and Phoebe who like to watch the chickens antics from the window.

We've kept hens for 5 years now and we've had our ups and downs, and learnt that some problems just aren't covered in text books!  This is why we started running our chicken keeping courses, primarily to provide a friendly intro and practical advice.  They have been so popular, we often get past course attendees email us when they get their own hens and also when they have further queries.  Chicken keeping has grown massively in this area and I hope to pass on our knowledge through our courses so other people can have as much satisfaction as we do and avoid any potential problems.

Our 2 hour courses include refreshments, goody bags and additional printed notes.  Free range eggs are sometimes available to buy; please ask on the day.  Hope thats everything covered, but if you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.

An excellent introduction to chicken keeping.

- Jane, 03 April 2013

My daughter and I had a brilliant time at Lisanne's hen party. It was informative and made us even more excited about getting our ex-bat girls. Lisanne is very knowledgeable and answered all our questions fully. Lisanne and Steve were very hospitable hosts and the cake was very tasty. We feel much more confident about looking after our girls. Thank you!

           Two hours very well spent

- Vanessa, 26 June 2012

I attended Lisanne's Hen Party last week and was so glad I did. I am getting some ex-battery hens soon and wanted to be a bit more knowledgable before they arrive. Lisanne was very helpful, answering a constant stream of questions and explaining to us more than the guide books can tell you. It was great to get such hands on advice and practical pointers. Whilst guide books are very useful, they hold so much information that, as a beginner its hard to know where to start. Lisanne explained all the basics and more so now I cant wait to meet my chucks and hopefully give them a good home. Also great cake and plenty of tea/coffee.

           Excellent

- Paul, 28 March 2012

Lisanne was very knowledgeable and was a great host. She managed to answer all our questions.

           Excellent

- Emma, 02 November 2011

An Excellent beginners course to introduce a person to keeping chickens, the host was very welcoming into her own home, told us lots about how she managed her chickens and gave us home made cake (obviously for us to taste the proceeds of keeping chickens!) she taked about omlet products but didnt give us the really hard sell, which i appreciated. Would be keen to know if there were advanced courses to go on in the future once we get our feathered friends.

           Wonderful!

- Deborah, 27 September 2011

I had a fabulous time on this course. The atmosphere was very relaxed, and no question was 'dumb'. Lisanne is very knowledgeable and made sure we are participated. Getting a first experience of the hens was excellent and I now can't wait to get my girls - especially knowing there is someone nearby who wont mind the odd daft question!

           Very informative course.

- Julie, 26 September 2011

Although we had a 150 mile round trip to attend the course, it was more than worth it. Lisanne and her husband were most welcoming hosts. We all enjoyed our time there, and learnt a great deal from Lisanne and her very obliging hens. The children and I can't wait to get our own hen family. Would highly recommend this course and host to any prospective hen keepers. Many thanks for a lovely time, Julie.

           Chicken Course

- Judy, 04 September 2011

Enjoyed a lovely afternoon with Lisanne and her chickens which was very interesting and helpful. The cake made with the eggs from the chickens was very good. Thank you.

           Enjoyable introduction to raising chickens

- Nona, 23 August 2011

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the course that Lisanne taught. The information was very well structured in basic topics that were easy to digest: Basic chicken types, Chicken housing, Cleaning, Secure Fencing and Medicines. Lisanne also prepared handouts for the group in case you could not remember the important facts. We had an opportunity to handle one of the chickens and reviewed her egg production stats. Overall it was a very good experience. Well Done Lisanne

OK - did what it said on the tin!
