About the course

This course is aimed at anyone new keeping chickens and will give you the confidence to start on a very rewarding (and addictive!) hobby.

The topics covered include

  • choosing your chickens
  • choosing your housing
  • feeding your chickens
  • eggs - what to expect
  • health and hygiene
  • getting into a general routine
  • handling your chickens (practical hands-on session)
  • and lots more....

There are lots of chances for discussion and questions over tea/coffee and home-made cakes, and opportunities to hand-feed and hold chickens should you wish. You can also compare a traditional wooden coop with an Eglu and see different set-ups that will give you ideas for your own chickens.

You will receive a goody bag, freshly laid eggs (subject to availability!) and a set of comprehensive course notes.

About Me

I have been keeping chickens for years, and have experience of pure breeds, hybrids and ex-battery hens, as well as hatching. I have accumulated a lot of knowledge and tips which I love to pass on and share with new owners. I used to teach science and IT, and then I qualified as a dog behaviourist and trainer and began teaching dog training courses. People found out I keep chickens and began asking questions, so it seemed a natural step to begin running chicken keeping courses. I actually live in an older detached bungalow in a residential area with 2 dogs, 2 cats and a rabbit, as well as my 13 chickens, so you can see how chickens work in a "normal" garden within a busy family life!

This course is aimed at anyone new to keeping chickens and will give you the confidence to start on a very rewarding (and addictive!) hobby. However, even if you have kept some hens for a while you will also benefit from the course as it provides helpful tips on making hen keeping easier.

           Recommend

Karen is a lovely hostess, very welcoming (and makes fab cake!) My partner and I have done a lot of research about chickens and have decided to take the plunge but wanted to get some insider know how and for me check I wouldn't be frightened of handling them! (I know that sounds silly!) Karen answered all our questions, gave us lots of advice and of course we got to meet the girls and handle them which was great. I've also emailed her since with a quick question and she responded really quickly. I would definitely recommend the course. If I'd gone knowing nothing I'd have learned even more but even with the research I'd done it was still soooo worthwhile! Big thank you :)

           An excellent essential introduction

- Angela, 19 September 2011

Had a lovely time with Karen and her chickens. I have been researching keeping chickens for some time, reading all the books - but nothing is better than meeting someone who has had hands on experience. Great advice, answered all my questions, relaxed, friendly environment and enormous fun meeting all the chooks. Recommended!

           Brilliant and extremely informative

- Lynne, 17 August 2011

The course was very, very good and I came away feeling that I knew alot more about chickens and how to keep them properly than before. Karen is a great teacher and makes you feel you can ask anything without feeling stupid. I would certainly recommend this course to anyone wishing to take up chicken keeping. Informative and fun, and the "goody bag" was a bonus. Thank you.

           Informative

- Karen, 27 March 2011

Karen hosted an informal and informative course for beginners like Glen and myself. She is clearly very enthusiastic about her hens and shared her passion and knowledge with our group. The take home book with all the notes on hen keeping and the goodie bag were a wonderful addition.

           Highly Recommended

Last year we were thinking about getting some chickens and had the opportunity to attend Karen’s course for beginners. If you are thinking of getting chickens, we would highly recommend this course. Karen certainly gives you a clear and concise understanding of all aspects of chicken keeping, with helpful practical advice and the opportunity for hands on handling as well, along with course notes to refer back to as and when required. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon with likeminded people and the home made cake (using Karen’s chicken eggs) wasn’t bad either. I had 3 peices! We are planning to get our Eglu Cube in the spring and look forward to our first eggs from our rare breed chickens.

           Excellent course

Karen is a very well organised person whose enthusiasm for her subject is infectious! Her course is very well structured, yet you feel like one of the family - you get to handle the chickens as well - she is a born instructor. One never feels inhibited about asking the most silly questions and she is full of tips and interesting stories gained from her experience and love of chickens. Being a complete beginner, I came away full of confidence, knowing that if I had a problem, I could turn to Karen for support. Cant recommend the course highly enough.
