Bumpa Bits are small plastic clips that fit onto a hen's beak to prevent her from pecking her housemates. The hen can still eat and drink normally, but the clip stops the ends of the beak coming together properly to stop her from pulling at skin and feathers.
This 25mm Bumpa Bit is suitable for medium sized chickens. You can read the forum guide on fitting Bumpa Bits by clicking here!
Fitting is much easier when using a pair of Circlip Pliers, also available to buy from us.More than 50 in stock.
Our customers frequently bought these items together.
Tried these as a last resort. We had to persevere for quite some time as we had one very determined chicken who just would not give up the habit. We tried sprays a plenty, these did not work for us. We then tried these bumpa bits, as soon as fitted the feather plucking stopped. We left in situ for about 2 weeks and then removed the bit! Feather plucking re started almost instantly. We fitted a new bit as the old one had shown slight signs of wear, as soon as bit fitted problem solved. Well we tried this a few times only to find that each time the bit was removed the plucking would start again. In all we persevered for about 10 weeks, eventually we seem to have got this under control. I have seen an odd peck and attempt to pull a feather or two in the last 3 or 4 weeks but I have not seen any feathers removed or can see any bare patches on the other chickens, so with fingers crossed we believe we have sorted this problem with the help of Bumpa Bits. It is important to replace them periodically with new ones as the wear will allow the offending chicken to be able to grip and pull feathers after about 3 weeks of wear.
We'd bought three new girls to add to our little flock but they had a shocking habit of plucking the old girls' feathers and eating them. Over night a hen could go from feathery to oven ready! We bought a handful of bumper bits and fitted them immediately. Except for a couple of hours of trying to rub them off on the floor, the girls adapted to them very quickly; they don't impede eating, drinking or catching insects and they still try to pluck feathers but the bits prevent them. Very good product, bit difficult to fit. Appears to have done the trick but cant be 100% sure as going through molt at the moment not noticed any feather pecking. Took about a week for the chicken to master eating properly especially pecking from the floor. would recommend this product, chicken may be upset for a few days but will get over it.
It was with a heavy heart that we had to resort to buying and using the Bumpa Bit, but two of our hens were getting very sparse of feathers, while the third was in pristine condition, we had tried anti-pecking spray which seemed to encourage even more pecking and separation was not an option. When the things arrived we felt guilty but we had no choice, we warmed them in water and after a couple of tries got one on, poor old Olive was not happy but after 30 minutes she seemed to forget about it, well I am glad to say there is now a lot of feather regrowth and no ill effects to Olive. I would recommended these to anyone and say that it has bought peace and harmony back to my girls.
The bottom and neck feathers are growing back after fitting the bumper bit to the "bully" I had tried two different anti pecking sprays which didn't really work, but the bumper bit solved the problem. Yes we had to buy circlip pliers to fit it, but well worth it.
