Sara, a member of the Ealing & District Bee Keeping Association, the London Bee Keepers Association and the British Bee Keeping Association, invites you to come and meet the honey bees her urban back garden…

You will be welcomed with drinks and home-made honey & oat cookies then introduced to the joys of keeping bees.

Our bee keeping began with our first training course at River Cottage in Dorset in May 2009. We've had honey bees here at Hen Corner since August 2011 and were delighted to win First Prize for our London Honey at the National Honey Show in October 2012.

We are pleased to bring you this London bee keeping session for children.

Team leader, Sara Ward, has many years experience working with children through work with charity, local schools and Children's Centres.

Our time together will include:

  • A basic introduction to urban bee keeping
  • Learning about the bees, the role of the bee keeper, and how they make us honey
  • Putting on protective bee suits and gloves
  • Collecting a frame of bees from the hive
  • Watching the bees behind glass in an Observation Hive
  • Discover where they fly and what they are collecting
  • Tasting their wonderful honey

If you decide that bee keeping is for you, we recommend that you link up with your local bee keeping association and consider doing the British Bee Keeping Association Basic Assessment Course.

About Me

_

‘Since moving into her West London home a few years ago, Sara Ward and her husband Andy have industriously set up Hen Corner, where they now have a stunning kitchen garden – with raised beds full of seasonal crops – fruit and nut trees, a flock of clucking hens and a beehive with busy bees hard at work making honey.’ Michele Jameson, Country Living Magazine

We are Hen Corner.

We love the bee keepers, the veggie bed diggers, the jam makers and cider drinkers, the chicken fanciers and the real bread bakers.

But not just in the deepest darkest countryside or the far, far away villages but right here in our cities and towns.

So, come on a course and join us on the journey…

Excellent introduction to hen keeping! - Barbara,

This is a wonderful venue in London where you can see chickens roaming and relaxing, and we also got to handle them. We had a great introduction to different types of chicken, what chickens need, how easy it is to keep them in London, and the legal side of what you can feed them and what to do with the eggs. We looked at the Eglu chicken houses and health and hygiene. Sara is warm and welcome and explains things clearly and patiently. She is a great hostess too and we enjoyed delicious homemade cake with our tea, and homemade jam in our goodie bags. The group was mixed with some young children and they really enjoyed it too. A great experience for all the family. Thanks to Sara and her family for running these courses!

Great introduction to urban hen keeping - Susie,

It may have been pouring with rain, but we still had an excellent time learning the basics of urban hen keeping. Sara and Andy were very generous with their time and hospitality, and gave loads of practical advice. We loved the home-made refreshments, and the goody bags too!

Introduction to Bee Keeping - Lark,

It was a lovely day in July. Excellent tuition and lovely food. I would highly recommend this even if you are not considering bee keeping. Sara is a great communicator and passionate about her business . She is very enterprising and I hope to take another course cometime in the future.

Bee Keeping day - Helen,

We had a really lovely day. We had perfect weather to spend all day in the garden, it was very relaxed and we were made to feel very at home. A nice small group of would be bee keepers led at a pleasant pace by Sara through the bee story and into the hives. Thoroughly enjoyable day and an excellant insight into being a bee keeper.

A very informative course - Elizabeth,

I really enjoyed this course as I came away with all the knowledge I needed to have my own chickens. Besides this, the course was very relaxed and fun, perfect to do with the children (and the husband!).
