Having kept poultry for over 15 years now, I am often asked for advice by novice and 'soon to be' poultry keepers. In response to this I offer introductory courses for those thinking of getting their first hens.
Courses are held here on my little registered smallholding, and are very 'hands on'. If the weather is bad, we can retreat into my workshop and warm up around the woodburner.
In spring / early summer we sometimes have chicks, ducklings and young birds for you to handle too !
Over tea / coffee and homemade cake we will discuss:
Different breeds that may suit you
Purchasing birds - what to look for
How to be prepared before you bring your hens home
Types of housing, runs and fencing
How to handle chickens
Daily / weekly routines
Where to position your hen house
Pests and diseases
Chicken behaviour - broodiness, pecking orders, introducing new birds
Types of feed and feeding patterns
There are printed notes and a little goody bag for each person to take home!
Please wear appropriate outdoor clothing as you may get wet and/or muddy! Wellies or stout boots are essential.
Children over 8 are welcome but must book a place.
Accessibility: there are about 8 steps up to the area where the chickens are, however, my workshop is wheelchair accessible and has a good view of the chicken runs. If you let me know of any mobility issues/access requirements, I will do my utmost to accommodate your needs.
Parking is on the drive or on the road opposite.
Sorry but dogs are not permitted due to livestock.
Wheelchair Access: Yes
Dog Friendly: No
Child Friendly: Yes
I have kept various types of poultry for over 15 years now, including pure breed chickens, hybrids, ex-battery hens, ducks, geese quails and even a few turkeys! I've hatched many many chicks and - yes - I do eat the odd spare cockerel, dispatching, plucking and dressing it myself. I DO NOT cover the dispatching of chickens on my courses!
My favourite breeds are the large ones - buff orpingtons, cochins and jersey giants and those that lay dark eggs, but I find even the ugliest most dishevelled bird very lovable! Since 2008 Ive always had a few ex battery hens too!
I live on a little registered smallholding in Lancashire on the border or Bury and Bolton with my family and animals including our Shetland and Ouessant sheep.
My chicken keeping courses are very informal and relaxed and are based on my 13 years experience with my feathery girls and boys .
