History

The Rhode Island Red was developed in the US state of Rhode Island in the 1890s. Crossing a large variety of other breeds including the Buff Cochin, Langsh, Black Red Malay, Hamburgh and Rose combed Leghorns together created the Rhode Island Red. The Rhode Island is another bird created for both meat and eggs, to satisfy the demands of the American population. The breed arrived in the UK in 1903 and became extremely popular very quickly. The Rhode Island Red is possibly the best-known breed in the world today. The Rhode crossed with a Sussex forms the basis of most of our present day hybrids.

Behaviour

Rhode Islands are classed as a heavy breed, but are active. They enjoy foraging on grass. They are bright and alert but at the same time quiet. They make great pets and are relatively hardy. They will produce a large amount of brown eggs a year.

Varieties

The Rhode Island is a Red bird. The plumage is a dark rich glossy red in the male, being slightly less glossy in the female. The male should only have black in his wings and tail and the female the same but can have black on her neck. The body is broad and deep and oblong in its shape. It has a broad flat back with a medium sized tail. The earlobes are red in colour as are the eyes. They have yellow legs

Comment: We have two beautiful hens sadly for sale. The first is a RIR x Columbia Blacktail beautiful colouring and very tame. . She comes to call, fine with cats and lays once a day. The other is a stunning Bluebelle (see other ad). They were bought at the same time and are approx 6 months old. The reason for selling them is their destruction of the garden and the dog next door who is slowly digging it's way under the fencing to get them. My partner is slowly going insane with rage and so to rescue the relationship the hens need to go. £22 each. Good home wanted and must have free range most of the day. Buyer collects.

          4.5 Out of 5 Stars Rhode Island Red - 7 Jul 2010
We have had a Rhode Island red for some years now and let me tell you she is as hard as nails. These chickens are as hardy as they come Maude (the chicken) keeps all the other chickens in their place but is the most friendly. She thinks nothing of coming in for a warm by the fire.
She has always stayed healthy and would feed about 10 people if she were not so sweet.
If you are looking for low maintainance, good layers and friendly chickens this is the breed for you.

These are very good birds for beginers as thay lay very well (I get 6 eggs per week a hen). Very good with children and are very hardy but I find that thay can be quite aggressive with smaller chickens and do tear up the ground quite a bit.
Saying that over all I would give them a 4 out of 5.

          5 Out of 5 Stars so fabulous - 31 May 2010
I had a trio of these gorgeous birds. The females got killed by a fox but our cockerel fought courageously and saved some other hens. He also survived another attack , but sadly died a week later of a heart attack. I'm just waiting to find the right birds to start again. And I would reccomend these beautiful, friendly chucks to anyone, particularly a beginner or a family. Thank you

4.5 Out of 5 Stars These birds look great , act great and lay great. What more could you want? - 26 May 2010
My oldest rhodie started laying within its third day coming to my house. My youngest laid when it was only seventeen weeks old. That's two weeks before it was due. I think they have lovely brownish, red plumage and they lay big eggs every single day.

          5 Out of 5 Stars Best Chook I've ever had - 23 Sep 2009
I love my new 'Rhodie' bantam. She is the friendliest of my flock ( I also have a Wyandotte, Sussex and Welsummer). From day 1 she has been happy not just to perch, but sit down on my arm whilst still nibbling corn from my hand! I think the plumage of a good Rhodle Island is one of the finest I've seen of any breed - very rich claret / almost chocolate colour. She lays nearly every day - even though she's a bantam. Fabulous bird, and great fun to have with kids.

          5 Out of 5 Stars A wonderful girl - 20 Aug 2009
I had my Rhodie, Red, a year ago along with a hybrid. She is so friendly and bright as a button and gone from a squeaky voiced baby who ran everywhere to now being a deep voiced chatty hen who struts around the garden with the gait of a sumo wrestler. She chats all the time and at the moment is laying 5-6 eggs a week even though she is having a mini moult whereas my hybrid gave up laying in April. Warning her eggs are big right from the word go and ive always struggled to get them into egg boxes. She will follow you around the garden waiting to be picked up or more likely waiting for treats. Red learnt how to use the cat flap within 2 weeks of me having her. Im so impressed that im having another 2 Rhodies this weekend from the same breeder.

          4 Out of 5 Stars Good friends - 29 Jun 2009
My two Rhode Island Red hens are both very friendly, despite little taming, and always look and act very healthy. Their only downside, in my opinion is that they are not completely reliable egg layers - they will lay well sized and frequent (about 3 every 5 days) eggs, but with disturbances, such as house movement, will not lay for a few days. due to their size, they can easily stand up for themselves if bullied, or at least resist damage. Overall, though, I would recommend this breed to almost anyone, especially families with children who love chickens as pets rather than livestock

4.5 Out of 5 Stars Very good egg layers - 10 Mar 2009
I haven't had my Rhode Island Red very long but she is a brilliant layer and very friendly. She flys to me and loves to get picked up. I would say a very good breed to get.
          4.5 Out of 5 Stars A handsome and Productive Bird - 11 Feb 2009
Our Rhodies are now approaching one year of age and have proven to be well worth rearing. They are consistent layers, excellent scavengers and friendly as well. This has been a hard, long winter in Oregon and they have all come through with colours flying. This bird is a pleasure to have. Greetings from my girls.
