Product FAQs

How do I set up the Smart Chicken Feeder when it arrives?

The feeder arrives pre-programmed to open and close on a daylight sensor, all you need to do is add 4 AA batteries. If you want to connect to the Omlet app using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to set the time schedule yourself, use the instruction manual or use our knowledgebase.

How do I download the app?

The Omlet App is available in the Google Play store for Android users, and the App Store for iOS users.

Simply open the relevant app store, and search for "Omlet", or use the following links:

Google Play

iOS App Store

How do I clean the Smart Feeder?

If your feeder is positioned correctly in a sheltered location it’s anti-clog and weatherproof, so you shouldn’t have to clean it regularly. However, depending on what feed you use, dust might build up at the bottom of the feeder, so we recommend you remove the base regularly to wipe off any dirt or debris.

If you need to, you can wash down the outside with the feeding port flaps closed. For internal cleaning we recommend a wipe with a cloth and using a bottle brush if necessary. Do not submerge or soak the feeder, as this can damage the electronic components.

Can I use the Smart Feeder with chicks?

The Smart Feeder is not compatible to use when feeding chicks.

How long will the batteries last?

Batteries will last up to 6 months depending on how frequently you set the doors to open and close.

How do I know when it's time to change the batteries?

Once the battery levels are below 10%, the light at the front of the feeder will start flashing red. If the battery level goes below 3%, the flashing will be continuous and the doors will default to open to make sure your chickens have access to their feed.

If your feeder is connected to Wi-Fi you will be able to remotely monitor the battery life and you will get a notification on your phone when it's time to change them.

How do I replace the batteries and how often?

The batteries are located at the bottom of the feeder, just remove the base and unscrew the lid to replace them.

We would suggest changing the batteries when the light on the feeder starts flashing red, or when the app is showing levels lower than 10%, but do check the batteries regularly to make sure they are in good condition.

Do the batteries degrade quicker in heat or extreme cold?

Alkaline batteries work best in moderate temperatures. In cold conditions, the battery’s chemical reactions slow down, which reduces its capacity and the energy it can deliver. In very hot conditions, reactions speed up and lead to faster energy loss, potential leakage, and other damage.

In short, extreme cold or heat can make alkaline batteries less effective and may shorten their lifespan.

Can I use rechargeable batteries?

Yes you can but there will be a reduced life.

What happens if the feeder loses Wi-Fi connection?

Open and close schedules will still operate as programmed. Once the connection is restored, you will start to receive notifications again through the app.

Can several people use the app for the same Smart Chicken Feeder?

Yes, you can share access to the feeder with family and friends, so they can see the status of the feeder and get notifications.

What if I want to hang my Smart Chicken Feeder?

You can hang the feeder from the handle in an upright position with the legs of the feeder taken off. Adjust the height of the ports so that it’s at a comfortable height for the smallest chicken in your flock to eat.

Make sure the structure you're hanging your feeder from and the hook you are using will be able to handle a weight of at least 22lb/10kg

I’m connected to Bluetooth, when can I change the settings?

Every time you change the settings or change the battery, you will need to resync to the feeder. Stand in range of the device (approx. 2m) and make sure you are connected to the internet. Open the Omlet app and reconnect to the feeder.

My feeding port flap has broken off, what should I do?

If the doors are forced in some way, they are designed to detach to avoid internal damage. To reattach them, open all the ports and carefully but firmly push the detached door into place. There is an image in the instruction manual that shows how to do this.

What happens if a piece of grit or dust jams the mechanism?

If the feeder’s doors fail open or close three times, it will be treated as a permanent obstruction. If you're connected with the Omlet App, you’ll get a notification about it. If you're not connected, a triple red flash will indicate the problem.

What if a door is obstructed, does it open?

If a door detects an obstruction while attempting to close it will stop and gently reopen again.

I’m having some issues with my Smart Chicken Feeder, is there a way to troubleshoot?

Yes, you can find out more about any issues with your device by activating a feedback code. Press the button on the feeder 5 times, and it will respond by flashing 5 times. Each flash represents information about the feeder, you can find this information in the instruction manual on page 9.

Can I open some ports but not others?

No, you can not program individual ports to open or close.

What do the flashing lights at the front of the feeder mean?

The controls and light status meanings can be found in the instruction manual on pages 7 and 8.

The amount of feed inside the port looks really low, is that right?

Yes, the feeder is designed to slowly release feed as the chickens eat. This reduces spill and makes sure that the available feed is as fresh as possible, and more feed will flow through as the chickens peck.
