About the course
Wheelchair Access: Yes
Dog Friendly: No
Child Friendly: Yes
The course will be held where we keep our chickens, a warm dry area and flushing toilets are on our wish list until we make them a reality then we would suggest that you wrap up warm and go to the loo before you arrive. There are public toilets in both Kirk Michael and Ballaugh within a mile or two. We have a dry sheltered area in our barn & stables in case of bad weather.
Elevenses will be provided and we have a portable stove for hot drinks.
Families with children of any age are welcome, sorry no dogs as our Loaghtan sheep will be lambing and strange dogs on the property will cause distress.
Topics to be discussed are:
- Daily Care
- Weekly and Monthly Tasks
- Feed and Water
- Choosing and Locating your House
- Choosing your Chickens
- Handling your Chickens
- Worming and Mite Prevention
- Wing Clipping
- Introducing Fido (& other pets)
- Predators (relevant to the Isle of Man - no talk of Mr Fox)
There will be plenty of time to ask any questions you may have.
We are Ruth and Nick Dermott and following our struggle to buy Chickens on the Isle of Man we decided to set up Pet Poultry.
We've had Chickens for around 3 years and started out with just 4 for 'some eggs', they came with a cockerel who we nicknamed Big Daddy. He sired our very first chicks hatched in our own incubator which was bought for Ruth as her birthday present! Along came a bunch of cute fluffy chicks and so the numbers grew. We got into the rare breeds after being enticed to try hatching the Lakenvelders and Friesian Fowl in 2011, we now enjoy showing these birds (who would have thought!!).
We are keen to help anyone who like ourselves struggled to find all the things you need locally and felt baffled by the array of options on the internet. Our courses will hopefully provide you with all you need to make informed choices regarding breeds, equipment and housing.
We are able to supply you with Omlet housing and complete starter kits (postage included in the standard price!) if you require.
