Introduction to Chicken Keeping Hosted by Cheryl Arvidson

This is an introductory session for people who are thinking about keeping chickens. It is divided between theoretical and practical learning, including a look at the different breeds and housing we have and the chance to handle our birds. We currently have a pen of Barnevelders, Pekin bantams and Barbu d'Anvers bantams.

Hen Party for Beginners - Morning Hosted by Annette Adaway

This course is suitable for beginners who just want to see a different passionate chicken keeper in action! (I know that chickens are addictive!) Refreshments, and nibbles are supplied. During the workshop you will feel foods, chickens, bedding, see poop, and see what chickens do, smell like (they don't smell, it's a fable they smell horrible!)  So if you know nothing about chickens and want to keep chickens!   • Hatching with a broody or an incubator. Selecting parent stock and eggs, humidity, egg-turning and candling.
  • Brooding - Care of chicks. Bedding, heat sources, feed.
  • Bringing 'growers' on. How fast do they grow, when do the pullets start to lay and when are the cockerels ready for despatch?
  • Despatching - How to despatch adolescent fowl using the 'broomstick method' and younger ones using despatching pliers.

All you need to know about keeping chickens but were too afraid to ask!  This is a fun, informal 3 hour course packed with advice aimed at those just starting out, considering taking the plunge or just interested.  You will get to meet our hens, see the Classic Eglu AND Eglu Cube and learn how to care for chickens.  This is all done in a normal garden in a modern estate in north Manchester, so book your place to see how you can make chicken keeping work in your own home.
