Yes, gerbils need a wheel so that they can fulfill their daily exercise requirements. However, a normal hamster wheel is very dangerous for gerbils - one with bare rungs can ensnare their tails and cause them a lot of pain! To prevent this from happening, you’ll need to stick to specific types of wheels for your gerbils.

When purchasing a wheel for your gerbils, you will need to pick one that doesn’t have gaps between the rungs, so that when your pet runs around in its wheel, it doesn’t get its tail caught inbetween them. Choose a solid wheel, one that your pets can’t get tangled up in. We sell these in the Qute section on the Omlet website, but they also come free with the unit.
You’ll also need to provide a wheel that is the right size for your gerbils. Too small, and it will be uncomfortable to run on. Something about seven or eight inches in diameter will be a good option.
