Zebra Dove (Geopelia Striata)

History

As the name suggests this small dove has black and white stripes on it's breast, throat and neck making it look very much like a little feathered Zebra. This dove is also commonly known as the Striped Ground Dove or the 'Peaceful' Dove. Zebra Doves can be found mostly throughout Indonesia, Northern Thailand, South East Asia and parts of Australia. They are around 23cm in length. These striking birds are a popular aviary bird and are captured widely for the Pet Industry in Singapore...

Their nest is made from leaves and grasses and usually found in a bush. The female lays 1-2 white eggs and incubation takes 13 - 18 days. Both parents look after the eggs and the young leave after 14 - 18 days.

Behaviour

The Zebra Dove prefers open farmland, parks and gardens and are mostly terrestrial. They spend many hours on the ground foraging for food and have adapted well to their environment. They feed on seed and small weeds.
