Why Do Cats Meow?

Cats meow for heaps of different reasons, which change depending on the cat’s age, mood and health. It can be hard to know what your cat is meowing at, and an awful lot of the time a cat will be meowing at you simply for no reason.

A young kitten will meow for its mother when it wants feeding. It will also call out if it has lost its way from the kitten nest.

Other reasons for a cat to meow include:

  • In response to seeing you - Almost like they are saying hello and acknowledging your arrival.

  • If they want you to pay them some attention.

  • Female cats may meow loudly when in heat in an attempt to attract a male to them.

  • Some cats will meow when stressed - If you can remember back to bringing your kitten home for the first time or perhaps a visit to the vet, did your cat stay silent or meow loudly?

  • If they want to be let out - Either if they have become trapped in a cupboard that they hid themselves in or if they simply want to go outside for the loo.

Important note: If you think your cat’s meowing has changed dramatically recently then you should take them to the vet for a check up. Some cats may be meowing because they are in pain so it is better to be safe than sorry.
