How To Pick Up A Guinea Pig That Runs Away

Some guinea pigs can be very eager for human attention, but others might be a little bit afraid of a giant hand invading their home. This is understandable at first, but they’ll need to get used to you or cuddling won’t be fun for either of you! If your guinea pig squeals when you pick them up, then one of the first things to do is make sure you’re not holding your guinea pig too tightly. Then, give them a thorough health check. Discomfort whilst being handled can mean that your pet has a medical problem, such as mange.

Feeding your guinea pig
Some guinea pigs may be a little timid at first, but will warm to you

If your guinea pig is in good health, then there are a few methods to try, in order to allow your guinea pigs to get used to you. Try hand feeding them through the bars of their run, or spending lots of time around them so they start to recognise your scent. If you have other animals, they may be reacting to the scent of cats and dogs, so try wearing some clean clothes and wash your hands thoroughly before making your approach. Ultimately, show them that time with you is great fun, and often means nibbling on some tasty treats.
