7 of the best dog breeds for children

Dogs can be great companions for children. As well as being a guaranteed best buddy and loyal guardian for years to come, dogs can teach children valuable life lessons such as responsibility. But as with any pet and person relationship, children must learn how to respect their dog’s boundaries and be taught how to safely interact with them. This being said, there are dog breeds that are renowned for being best with children. We’ve listed our top 7 to help you find the perfect playmate for your family.

1. Newfoundland

Never let their size fool you. This gentle giant is an incredible family dog with a huge heart to match their appearance. But, they should be taught not to jump up on people from an early age to avoid accidentally knocking a child over, simply due to their sheer size. When correctly trained, Newfoundlands are both playful and patient, which is especially important for a family dog with younger children.

2. Labrador retriever

It will be of no surprise that the loveable Labrador retriever has made the list. Incredibly popular in the UK and beyond, their loyal, friendly and playful nature makes them ideal for families. Labradors love people of all ages and are happy to tumble around with smaller kids but also enjoy hanging out with older children.

3. Golden retriever

Also part of the retriever family, golden retrievers share many of the qualities that make Labrador retrievers great with children. Intelligent and eager to please, this breed thrives off love and affection from their family. And after a nice long walk, your golden will reward you with a quiet cuddle in the evening.

4. English bulldog

The English bulldog might have a fierce appearance, but you’ll be surprised to hear that this breed is actually very gentle and friendly with children. You probably won’t be surprised to know that bulldogs are also very relaxed and love to sleep. Plus, their guarding instincts also make them protective of their close friends and family.

5. Boxer

Boxers are very people-oriented dogs who love nothing more than to spend time with their family, especially children. They’re gentle, caring, and love to cuddle, but they can be incredibly energetic and bouncy if they haven't had enough exercise. To avoid a little too much rough and tumble, ensure you’re providing your dog with enough mental and physical stimulation throughout the day.

6. Irish setter

Irish setters are wonderful family dogs. They love being around people, playing with children and they really enjoy training. If you’re looking for a dog with just the right amount of energy for your children then the Irish setter could be perfect for you.

7. Beagle

The beagle is a very intelligent and friendly dog breed who finds it easy to get on with people if socialized early. They can be difficult to tire out with games alone though, so encourage them to retrieve their favourite dog toy and train them to keep them active.

Omlet and your family dog

My husband really wants us to get a dog, but I want to make sure that we get one that would be good with our three young children. I love the idea of getting a Newfoundland, though, because it is very gentle. However, how well does that breed do with protecting homes? I just want to make sure that whatever dog we bring into our home could be both gentle and protective. http://www.foxysdogwash.com.au
